[Classification by character characteristics]
Characters can take on a wide variety of shapes and arrangements, but they are generally divided into ideograms and phonograms based on the relationship between the characters and the elements of language they represent, and the latter are further divided into syllabic characters and monophonic characters (or phonemic characters). However, as already mentioned, the explanation that ideograms represent only meanings without sounds and phonograms represent only sounds without meaning is not strictly correct.
