A village in Yoshino District, southeastern Nara Prefecture. Population 1,023 (1995). It borders Mie Prefecture to the east via the Daidaka Mountains, including Mt. Odaigahara, the Omine Mountains, including Mt. Misen, run through the west, and the Kitayama River flows south through the center. 97% of the village area is covered by forests, creating a steep topography. Mt. Odaigahara is one of the rainiest areas in Japan, with an annual precipitation of over 4,700 mm. As part of the Kumano River Power Development Plan, Sakamoto Dam was completed in 1962, and Ikehara Dam in 1964, submerging about 200 houses in both Higashinokawa and Shirakawa villages, and 60% of the residents relocated out of the village. 奈良県南東部,吉野郡の村。人口1023(1995)。東は大台ヶ原山などの台高山脈によって三重県と接し,西部には弥山(みせん)などの大峰山脈が走り,中央部を北山川が南流する。村域の97%が山林で,急峻な地形をなす。大台ヶ原山は年間降水量が4700mmをこえる日本屈指の多雨地帯である。熊野川電源開発計画により,1962年に坂本ダム,64年には池原ダムが完成し,東ノ川,白川の両集落約200戸が水没,その6割が村外に移住した。
