[Died] June 11, 2015. New York, New York, USA. Jazz saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. Full name Randolph Denard Ornette Coleman. As a teenager, he began playing alto and tenor saxophone, and soon worked as a player in dance bands and rhythm and blues groups. At the time, jazz improvisations were performed using traditional chord progressions, but Coleman created his own style of free jazz and formed his own band in the 1950s. His first album Something Else in 1958 and The Shape of Jazz to Come in 1959 were a completely new style of atonal improvisation for jazz, which created a huge sensation and gave birth to the free jazz movement that followed. However, he was not financially well off, and retired from the jazz world from 1962 to 1964. He reappeared in 1965 and gained twice as much popularity as before, and was active at the forefront of avant-garde jazz ever since. As a composer, he is best known for "Skies of America," which was recorded in 1972 with the London Symphony Orchestra and Coleman on alto saxophone. He received the Praemium Imperiale in 2001 and the Pulitzer Prize in 2007.

Popular for his British gentlemanly style, his moustache became a trend called the Colman beard. Starred in A Tale of Two Cities (1935) and Random Harvest (1942). In 1947, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for A Double Life.

[Died] March 27, 1920. New York. American landscape painter. He studied under A. Durand in New York, and traveled to Europe from 1860 to 1862. In 1860, he founded the American Watercolor Society with J. Smiley. He stayed in Europe again from 1871 to 1876. His representative works include Ships on the Western Plains (Union League Club, New York) and Mountain View of Colorado (Metropolitan Museum of Art).

A saint of Celtic Christianity in Ireland. He became Bishop of Lindisfarne in England in 661, and fought to defend the religious practices of the Celtic Church and opposed the conversion of the church to Roman Catholicism. He was defeated in the battle for orthodoxy at the Council of Whitby in 663 or 4, and after returning home he founded a monastery and preached. His feast day is on February 18.
