Hulun Buir League (English spelling)
A league in the northeastern part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in China, where the Hulun and Buyir salt lakes are located. Population: 2.57 million (1994). Also called Hulunbuir. Located at the eastern end of the Mongolian Plateau, it is a major livestock farm, known for Sanhe horses and Sanhe beef, and has livestock processing industries in Manchuria and the league capital, Hailar. The Nomonhan Incident refers to a series of events over the southwestern border of the Hulunbuir League, which began in May 1939 with military conflict between Mongolia, the Soviet Union, and Japan, leading to the annihilation of the Japanese army in late August and a ceasefire in mid-September.
