A colloquial name for the white-occupied farming and pasture areas of Kenya in East Africa when it was a British colony. Kenya, known as the East African Protectorate, was located directly on the equator, but its center was in the cool highlands at an altitude of 1,500 to 2,500 meters, which led to the settlement of white people. With the promulgation of the Crown Lands Ordinance in 1902, vast areas were handed over to white settlers at low rent, and by the end of 1915, approximately 21,000 km2 of land had been established as an area with exclusive occupancy rights for white people only. Coffee and other agricultural products for export were produced in the White Highlands. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
