An official name in China during the Yuan and Qing dynasties. During the Yuan dynasty, they belonged to the Keshiks, the Mongol monarch's personal guard, and were in charge of document work. Some, like the Korghuz who served Batu, wielded immense power over the entire administration. In Mongolian, characters, documents, and books are called bichik, with the suffix -chi, meaning person, added. They were widespread in the various Mongolian governments, such as the Ilkhanate and the Kipchak Khanate. The bithesi style of writing book used during the Qing dynasty is a corrupted version of this pronunciation. [Masaaki Sugiyama] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
