A mountain range in the southern part of the U.S. state of Alaska. It stretches in an arc for 650 km from the base of the Alaska Peninsula, linking it with the coastal mountains on the west coast of Canada. There are many glaciers. The Alaska Railroad runs north to south through the center, connecting Fairbanks and Anchorage, and on to Seward. High peaks such as Mount McKinley (6,194 m), the highest peak in North America, as well as Foraker, Hunter, and Hayes, tower above the mountain.
