Ion beam machining

A method of processing a workpiece by accelerating and focusing ions and irradiating them with the collision energy. This processing method takes advantage of the high collision efficiency due to the fact that the mass of the ions (tool) and the mass of the atoms in the workpiece are nearly equal, and its principle is fundamentally different from electron beam processing, which uses an electron beam to heat the workpiece and utilizes its evaporation phenomenon. While it has advantages such as a high efficiency of using kinetic energy and not needing a vacuum device like electron beam processing, it has problems such as low efficiency of ion generation and poor beam focusability.

イオンを加速および集束して被加工物に照射し，その衝突エネルギーを利用して加工を行う方法。工具としてのイオンの質量と，被加工物の原子の質量がほぼ等しいことによる衝突効率のよさを利用する加工法で，電子ビームにより被加工物を加熱してその蒸発現象を利用する電子ビーム加工とは本質的にその原理を異にする。運動エネルギーの利用効率が高い，電子ビーム加工のように真空装置を必要としないなどの長所をもつ反面，イオン発生の能率が低い，ビームの集束性が悪いなどの問題点がある。
