A seaweed of the family Rhodomelaceae in the order Ceratophyceae. It grows in colonies on rocks in the upper intertidal zone. The algae are cartilaginous, 10-25 cm tall, cylindrical and 1-2 mm thick, branched, and densely covered with twigs, giving them the appearance of cedar leaves. They are found in Hokkaido, the northern Pacific coast, and the Kuril Islands, and are also distributed in the Bering Sea and the west coast of the United States.
