The ruins are located in central Iraq, about 15 km east of Babylon, and a group of tells, including Uhaymīr to the west and Ingharra to the east, are scattered over an area of about 4 km from east to west across the old Euphrates riverbed. Excavations were carried out from 1923 to 1933, but the overall picture of the city was hardly clear due to crude methods and insufficient reporting.
