…A change in body color in an animal caused primarily by the activity of chromatophores. This phenomenon is important for the survival of an individual or species of animal. There are two types of body color change: rapid physiological changes caused by the aggregation and diffusion of pigment granules within the chromatophores, and relatively slow morphological changes caused by an increase or decrease in the amount of pigment or the number of pigment cells. For example, in the case of cryptic coloration, there are many known examples of rapid physiological changes that adapt to the color or pattern of the background of prey. …
