A common name for the Young Men's Christian Association. A worldwide youth organization based on Christian principles that aims to improve the overall character of its members, promote a spirit of service, and build an ideal Christian society. In 1844, George Williams (1821-1905), who worked at a London dry goods store, founded the organization with 12 friends to help the young workers of the time who were suffering under hardship. YMCAs spread to various places, and in 1855 the first world conference was held in Paris, where the World YMCA Alliance was formed and its headquarters was located in Geneva. In Japan, YMCAs were first formed in Tokyo in 1880 (Meiji 13) at the suggestion of Kanda Naibu and others, and were later organized in various places. After that, student evangelism took place, and in 1888 the Young Men's Christian Association of Tokyo University was founded. Influenced by the visit of J. R. Mott to Japan, the Young Men's Christian Association (YM) movement became popular in various cities. As of 2000 (Heisei 12), there are approximately 106,000 members in Japan, with 34 city YMCAs and 37 university YMCA affiliates. There is also the YWCA, which was organized with a similar spirit as a movement for Christian young women.
