The process of removing the flesh and internal organs of animals and birds, stuffing them with cotton or hemp, treating them to prevent insects and preservation, and creating something that will retain its external shape when it was alive.
[Additional information] A "real stuffed animal" is an animal that has had its bones and internal organs removed, leaving only the epidermis, and has artificial bones and eyes inserted to give it the appearance of a living animal, for display or appreciation. A "temporary stuffed animal" is an animal that has had its bones and internal organs removed, leaving only the epidermis, and preserved for research purposes in the same shape as when it was dead.

鳥獣の肉や内臓を取り除き綿・麻などを詰めて、防虫・防腐処理をし、生きているときの外形を保つように作ること。また、そのもの。
[補説]骨・内臓などを取って表皮だけにしたものに人造の骨・眼球などを入れて生きているときの姿にした展示・鑑賞用のものを「本剝製」という。また、骨・内臓などを取って表皮だけにし、死んだときの形を保つようにして研究用に保存したものを「仮剝製」という。
