A local official during the Joseon Dynasty, a general term for Buyin, Daedohobusa, Moksa, Dohobusa, Gunsun, Hyeonrei, and Hyeonkan. They were also called Won. They governed the eup (a general term for administrative divisions within a province, such as Bu, Daedohobu, Mok, Dohobu, Gun, and Hyeon) under the supervision of the Gwanghwamun, the head of the province. Their duties were called the Seven Suryeongs, which were to promote agriculture, increase the number of households, establish schools, improve military administration, impose equal labor, conduct trials quickly, and eliminate evil people. The Gwanghwamun evaluated the performance of each Suryeong based on these seven criteria, and reported the evaluation to the central government with four grades: Good, Good, Bad, and Worst.
