Alongside the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, this is one of the largest life insurance companies in the United States. Its headquarters are in Newark, New Jersey. Its predecessor was the Widows' and Orphans' Friendly Society, founded in Newark in 1873 by John Fairfield Dryden (1839-1911). It became the Prudential Friendly Society in 1875, and adopted its current name in 1877. It focused on simple insurance for workers, expanding its business scale, and by the end of the 19th century, along with the newly emerging Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, it had a position third to the three long-standing life insurance companies, Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Co., Equitable Life Assurance of the United States, and New York Life Insurance Co.
