The process of qualitatively ranking corporate bonds according to certain standards in order to adjust the terms and amount of bond issuance and to assist investors in making investment decisions. Corporate bond ratings are particularly well developed in the United States, where Moody's Investors Service Inc. (founded in 1903 and became part of Dun & Bradstreet, known for credit research, in 1962), Standard & Poor's Corp. (began rating in 1916, and has been doing so ever since) and others have done so.
