Garden Suburb

…Housing construction, which was initially planned as a purely commercial enterprise, soon proved unprofitable, and was carried out as a charitable project by non-profit foundations such as the Peabody Trust, and was eventually taken over by public housing projects run by local governments and other organizations. Many of the middle-class homes were built in residential areas known as "Garden Suburbs," and many of them were semi-detached houses, two houses in one building. Garden suburban residential areas were commuter towns (residential cities) that took landscape planning into account, and the first of these was Bedford Park, built in the west suburbs of London in the late 1870s. …
