…They are also called Boers. They are now called Afrikaners or Afrikanders. The word Boer means "farmers" in Dutch, and it comes from the fact that after the Dutch East India Company settled in the Cape in the 17th century, they encouraged immigrants from the Netherlands, many of whom were farmers.
