Shizuo Ito

Japanese:
Shizuo Ito

Poet. Born December 10, 1906 in Isahaya, Nagasaki Prefecture. After graduating from the Department of Japanese Literature at Kyoto Imperial University, he was employed at Osaka Prefectural Sumiyoshi Junior High School. After World War II, he was transferred to Abeno High School, but continued to teach there throughout his life. He began writing poetry around the time he graduated from university. His familiarity with Japanese classics and his love for Rilke and Hölderlin strongly influenced his style of poetry. His poems published in the literary magazine Ro attracted the attention of Yasuda Yojuro, who invited him to appear in Cogito in 1933 (Showa 8). He subsequently became a member of the Japanese Romantic School and published his first collection of poems, Lamentations for My Love (1935), establishing his position as a poet with his hard-edged yet fresh style of poetry. In 1966, he became a member of the "Four Seasons" magazine and received the Tokoku Kitamura Prize for "Summer Flowers" (1940). His third collection of poems, "Spring Hurry" (1943), strongly reflects his return to Japanese lyricism. After World War II, he published his fourth collection, "Echoes" (1947), but he was soon afflicted by pulmonary tuberculosis and died on March 12, 1953, after more than three years of battling the disease.
