Scallop-shaped ancient tomb - Hotategaishiki kofun

Japanese: 帆立貝式古墳 - ほたてがいしきこふん

A general term for a type of kofun with a relatively small square attachment on one side of a circular mound and a planar shape resembling a scallop. Strictly speaking, a distinction should be made between circular mounds with a square extension and keyhole-shaped mounds with a shortened front section, but it is often difficult to distinguish between the two. They are common in the middle Kofun period, with over 400 examples nationwide. They are relatively small in size compared to keyhole-shaped mounds. They may be located as auxiliary mounds to larger keyhole-shaped mounds, but in some areas they may form the center of a group of kofun.

古墳の一形式で，円丘の一方に比較的小さな方形の付属物が付き，平面形がホタテガイに似た古墳の総称。厳密には円墳に方形の造り出しが付属したものと，前方後円墳の前方部が短小化したものとを区別すべきであるが，判断が困難な場合も少なくない。古墳時代中期に多く，全国では400例を超える。規模は前方後円墳と比較すると相対的に小さい。大型前方後円墳の陪冢（ばいちよう）的位置にある場合もあるが，地域によっては古墳群の中心をなす場合もある。
