Born: October 16, 1927 in Danzig [Died] April 13, 2015. German novelist from Lübeck. Raised in the Free City of Danzig, he joined the Nazi Waffen SS at the age of 17 in 1944 towards the end of World War II, and was wounded in battle and taken prisoner in 1945. After the war, he studied sculpture and painting at the art school in Düsseldorf, and joined the literary group "Group '47" to publish poems and plays. He moved to Paris in 1956, and settled in West Berlin from 1960 onwards. His novel Die Blechtrommel (1959) won the "Group '47" award, and he quickly gained worldwide fame. This work depicts the turbulent Danzig of the first half of the 20th century from the perspective of a protagonist who has stopped growing as a child (→Danzig issue). Later, he became more involved in politics and was active for the German Social Democratic Party. In 2006, just before the publication of his autobiography, Peeling Onions, he confessed that the story he had told in the book about his past as a member of the SS was true, causing a huge stir both at home and abroad. His major works include the novels Katz und Maus (The Cat and the Mouse) (1961), Hundejahre (The Years of the Dog) (1963), Örtlich betäubt (Under Local Anesthesia) (1969), Aus dem Tagebuch einr Schnecke (From the Diary of a Snail) (1972), Der Butt (The Flounder) (1977), Das Treffen in Telgte (The Encounter in Telgte) (1979), Die Rättin (The Mouse Girl) (1986), Unkenrufe (The Call of the Frog) (1992), Ein weites Feld (The Endless Wilderness) (1995), and Mein Jahrhundert (My Century) (1999). He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1999. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
