German composer. Born to a singer, he showed a talent for composition from an early age. After studying composition and piano in his hometown of Cologne, he held important positions in Germany and Liverpool, including music director of Koblenz, and from 1891 taught composition at the Academy of Arts Berlin. Influenced by Mendelssohn and Brahms, he left behind works in many genres, including three symphonies, chamber music, cantatas, oratorios, and operas, and during his lifetime he gained fame as a leading composer of large-scale choral works. Today, only a few of his works are known in Japan, but his Violin Concerto No. 1 (1868), Scottish Fantasia for violin and orchestra (1880), and Kol Nidrei for cello and orchestra (1881) are widely loved. ドイツの作曲家。歌手を母とし，早くから作曲に才能を示す。生地ケルンなどで作曲やピアノを学んだのちコブレンツの音楽監督などドイツ各地やリバプールで要職を歴任し，1891年からベルリン芸術アカデミーで作曲を教えた。メンデルスゾーンやブラームスの影響を受け，三つの交響曲，室内楽曲，カンタータ，オラトリオ，オペラなど多ジャンルに作品を残し，生前は大規模な合唱曲の第一人者として名声を得た。今日日本で知られる作品はごくわずかだが，《バイオリン協奏曲第１番》（1868年），バイオリンと管弦楽のための《スコットランド幻想曲》（1880年），チェロと管弦楽のための《コル・ニドライ》（1881年）は広く親しまれている。前２者はそれぞれヨアヒム，サラサーテに献呈された作品。→ボーン・ウィリアムズ／山田耕筰／ルビンステイン
