In China, mud with chain stitch marks has been excavated from a tomb dating to the mid-Western Zhou period (around 950 BCE). Greek artifacts from around 400 BCE include a piece of linen (unearthed in Attica) on which the embroidery thread has degraded and only the pinholes of a lion remain, and a fragment of a centaur, a wool-embroidered wall hanging for a tomb. In the Altai tombs, there are horse saddles made of embroidered and appliquéd felt, and appliqué wall hangings for a tomb.
