Born: 1554. Antwerp
Died: October 7, 1626. A Flemish landscape painter active in Rome, Italy. In 1583, he succeeded his brother Matthaus, who died young while working on a fresco for the Vatican Palace called "The Four Seasons," and completed the work. His early style was Mannerist, but after 1600 he was influenced by A. Elsheimer and produced many small easel paintings. His works include "The Fisherman" (1624, Louvre Museum) and "River Scene" (Prado Museum).

イタリアで活躍したフランドルの風景画家。 1583年にバチカン宮殿のフレスコ画『四季』などを制作途中で夭逝した兄マテウスの跡を継いで作品を完成した。初期の作風はマニエリスム風であるが，1600年以降は A.エルスハイマーの影響を受け，小品のイーゼル画も多く制作。作品は『漁夫』 (1624，ルーブル美術館) ，『川景色』 (プラド美術館) など。
