[Died] January 14, 1901. London. An Anglican clergyman and historian. Bishop of Peterborough in 1891, Bishop of London in 1897. His historical works include The Age of Elizabeth (1876), History of the Papacy (5 volumes, 82-94), and Cardinal Wolsey (88). He lectured on church history at both Cambridge and Oxford. He was the founding editor of the English Historical Review from 1886 to 1891.
