Arachne - Arachne (English spelling) Arachnē

A woman in Greek mythology and a master weaver. She was the daughter of Idmon, a master dyer in Colophon, Lydia, a city of dyes. Arachne, an accomplished weaver, competed with Athena, the goddess of weaving. In the contest, the goddess wove stories of the twelve Olympian gods and humans punished by the gods, while Arachne wove love stories of the gods. Arachne's work was perfect, but she boasted that she surpassed Athena in weaving skills, so Athena became angry and tore up Arachne's work and beat her. She tried to commit suicide in fear and grief, but the goddess would not allow it and turned her into a spider.

ギリシア神話の女性で織物の名手。染物の町リディアの、コロフォンの染めの名手イドモンの娘。織物に優れたアラクネは、織物の女神アテネとその技を競った。その試合で、女神はオリンポスの十二神と、神々に懲らしめられた人間たちの話を織り、一方アラクネは、神々の恋物語を織り上げた。アラクネの作品は完璧(かんぺき)であったが、彼女が織物の技術ではアテネをしのぐと自慢したために、アテネは怒ってアラクネの作品を引き裂き、彼女を打ち据えた。彼女は恐怖と悲しみのあまり自殺を図ったが、女神はそれを許さず、彼女をクモに変えた。
