A mountain range that runs north to south through the center of the Tohoku region. It stretches for about 500 kilometers from the Natsudomari Peninsula in the southern part of Mutsu Bay in Aomori Prefecture in the north along the borders of Iwate, Akita, Miyagi, and Yamagata prefectures, before joining the Taishaku Mountains in Fukushima and Tochigi prefectures. The Nasu Volcanic Belt overlaps the folded uplift zone of the Tertiary layers, and many mountains reach altitudes of around 2,000 meters due to the recent volcanic ejecta. Volcanoes that can be seen include Mt. Hakkoda, Mt. Hachimantai, Mt. Iwate, Mt. Kurikoma, Mt. Komagatake, Mt. Azuma, Mt. Zao, Mt. Adatara, and Mt. Nasu. The mountain range was formed by mountain building movements from the Miocene onwards, and is home to numerous metal deposits, a variety of volcanic landforms and hot springs. It boasts some of Japan's leading mountain natural parks, including Towada-Hachimantai National Park, Kurikoma Quasi-National Park, Zao Quasi-National Park, Bandai-Asahi National Park and even a part of Nikko National Park. The Ou Mountains, which run from north to south, have long been an obstacle to communication between the east and west regions, and traffic has been linked through steep mountain passes. Currently, the JR Hanawa Line, Kitakami Line, Tazawako Line, Rikuu East Line, Senzan Line, Ou Main Line, and Ban'etsu West Line cross the mountain range, and national highways 46 to 49 and 107 also pass through it. Before the opening of the Sengan Tunnel in 1966, National Highway 46 was closed at Kunimi Pass in winter due to snowfall, but now east-west traffic is free all year round. The Tohoku Expressway has also opened, crossing the mountain range along the Hanawa Line in northern Iwate Prefecture and connecting Kazuno City in Akita Prefecture to Aomori Prefecture. Above an altitude of 1,000m, there are coniferous forests such as Aomori-todomatsu, and in the deep snowy season, frost-covered trees appear everywhere.
