Harpuiai (English spelling)

Japanese: ハルピュイアイ（英語表記）Harpuiai

A female monster in Greek mythology. Born to Thaumas, son of the sea Pontus, and Electra, daughter of Oceanus, she is the personification of a whirlwind. She is usually two in number, but sometimes three. She is depicted as a winged woman or a bird with a human face, and is thought to grab the souls of the dead in her sharp claws and carry them to the underworld. She was chased away by Calais and Zetes, crew members of the Argo, who came to King Phineus of Thrace, when she was destroying his dinner table, and fled to the island of Strophades.

ギリシア神話の女怪。海ポントスの息子タウマスとオケアノスの娘エレクトラの間に生れた，旋風を人格化した存在で，数は通常2人だが，3人とされることもある。翼をもつ女，あるいは人間の女の顔をした鳥の姿に表わされ，死者の魂を鋭い爪でつかみ冥府に運ぶとみなされた。トラキアのフィネウス王の食卓を荒していたところをアルゴ船の乗組員として彼のもとへ来たカライスとゼテスに追払われ，ストロファデス島に逃れたとされる。
