This is a Soto Zen temple located in Ikenoue-cho, Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, and was relocated to its current location in Mukouda-cho, Kawauchi City in 1895. Its mountain name is Gyokuryu-zan. It was founded in 1394 (Oei 1) by the 7th head of the Shimazu clan, Motohisa, who invited Sekioku Shinryo to build it. Since then, it has ruled over the three provinces of Nihon, Satsuma, and Sumitomo as the family home of successive generations of the Shimazu clan, and is a famous temple with over 1,000 branch temples throughout the country. In 1546 (Tenbun 15), it became a temple built at the request of Emperor Gonara. Among the successive abbots, the most famous are the third abbot of Fukushoji, Chuo Shuho (childhood name Baishu), who was the heir to the temple's founder, Shimazu Motohisa; the fifth abbot, Shingen Yoshinobu (restored); the 11th abbot, Tenyu Sozu; the 13th abbot, Otaka Munetoshi; and the 18th abbot, Kenshu Naka. 鹿児島県鹿児島市池之上町に存した曹洞宗の禅寺で,1895年に現在地の川内市向田町へ移転した。山号は玉竜山。1394年(応永1)島津家7代元久が石屋真梁(せきおくしんりよう)を請じて創建し,以来島津家歴代の菩提所として日・薩・隅3州を支配する一方,全国に千有余の末寺を有する名刹であった。また1546年(天文15)には,後奈良天皇綸旨(りんじ)により勅願寺となった。歴代の住持のなかでは,開基檀越(だんおつ)島津元久の世子であった福昌寺3世仲翁守邦(ちゆうおうしゆほう)(幼名梅寿)をはじめとして,5世心厳良信(中興),11世天祐宗津,13世大鷹宗俊,18世代賢守仲などがとくに著名である。
