The name of a genre of shamisen music. It was founded by Hiraoka Hiroshi (Hiraoka Ginshu), a pioneer of the railway industry. After returning from the United States in 1877, he began manufacturing train carriages, while at the same time supporting Yamabiko Hideo (the 11th Masumi Kato) of Katobushi and working hard to revive it. He also studied Noh plays, Itchu-bushi, and Kiyomoto, and released a variety of new pieces of his own invention. These new pieces were generally called Hiraoka-bushi, but from around 1902, under the name Ginshu, he called them Tomei-bushi. It became popular as many of the top entertainers of the time learned it, and from around 1928, it was renamed Tomei-ryu. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
