This 72 km long canal runs from the port of Amsterdam in the Netherlands through Utrecht and into the Rhine (Waal) near Tiel, and was completed in 1952. This canal, which had connected small rivers and waterways since the 17th century, was first partially canalized in 1822, and was finally fully opened after renovations from 1881 to 1995, making it one of Europe's important inland waterways. As the volume of traffic subsequently increased rapidly, a new waterway was planned in 1932, but construction was halted due to World War II.
