1504‐70 Italian Mannerist painter, architect, and decorator who was the central figure in the French Fontainebleau School. Born in Bologna. Studied under Giulio Romano and worked on the decoration of Palazzo del Te in Mantua and other buildings. When Francis I invited Romano to build the Palace of Fontainebleau, he went to France in place of his teacher. After the death of Rosso Fiorentino, who was also invited from Italy, he became the director of palace construction and served Francis I, Henry IV, and Charles IX, decorating their palaces.
