Akita

Japanese:
Akita

This town was located in Houtaku-gun in the mid-western part of Kumamoto Prefecture. It is now an area that occupies the southwestern part of Kumamoto City. The former Houtaku-cho was incorporated as a town in 1971 (Showa 46) and was incorporated into Kumamoto City in 1991 (Heisei 3). The name comes from the former Houtaku-gun. The area is made up of the Shirakawa flood plain, where the natural levees of the former town intersect, and old and new reclaimed land from different eras. Because it is a low-lying marshland, paddy fields (rice, rushes, wheat) and lotus fields were prominent, but with the implementation of flood prevention projects from the end of the 1960s, vegetable cultivation, which had previously been a secondary crop, has solidified its foundation as greenhouse farming (eggplant, cucumber, etc.) in the suburbs of the city. In addition, many farmers in the area along the Ariake Sea also cultivate seaweed and clams.
