A city in the western part of Akita Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889 and is the prefectural capital. Facing the Sea of ​​Japan, it occupies the main part of the Akita Plain, with the city center at the mouth of the Omono River and accessed by the Ou Main Line, Uetsu Main Line, and Akita Expressway. New Akita Airport opened in 1981. Akita Castle was established in Takashimizu in 733 to subjugate the Emishi, and after the Satake clan was transferred to the city in 1602, it developed as a castle town, and Tsuchizaki was the river port of the domain. It is the political, economic, and cultural center of the prefecture and tends to be a commercial city, but in 1965 it was designated a new industrial city, and industrial zones were developed in Barajima, Araya, Tsuchizaki, and other areas, and Akita Port was developed. Industries include oil refining, pulp, chemical fertilizer, and lumber, and the city ranks first in the prefecture in terms of manufacturing shipment value, at 320 billion yen (2003). There are oil fields in Yabase. Traditional sake brewing, Kihachijo, beech furniture, and lacquerware are also local specialties. The Akita Plain is a major producer of Akita rice and Akita bush clover. The city is home to the National Akita University and Senshu Park (the site of Akita Castle), and is famous for its annual Kantou (traditional lantern festival). In January 2005, Kawabe Town and Yuwa Town in Kawabe County were incorporated. Area: 906.09 km2 . Population: 323,600 (2010).

秋田県西部の市。1889年市制。県庁所在地。日本海に面し,秋田平野の主部を占め,雄物川河口部に中心市街があり奥羽本線,羽越本線,秋田自動車道が通じる。1981年新秋田空港が開港した。733年高清水に蝦夷(えぞ)平定のための秋田城が置かれ,1602年佐竹氏転封後その城下町として発展,土崎は藩の河港であった。県の政治・経済・文化の中心で,商業都市の傾向が強いが,1965年新産業都市に指定され,茨島(ばらじま),新屋(あらや),土崎などに工業地帯の造成,秋田港の整備が進められた。製油,パルプ,化学肥料,製材などの工業が行われ,製造品出荷額では3200億円(2003)を上げて県内1位を占め,八橋(やばせ)に油田がある。伝統的な酒造,黄八丈,ブナ材家具,漆器も特産。秋田平野一帯は秋田米とアキタブキの大産地。国立秋田大学,千秋公園(秋田城跡)があり,年中行事竿灯(かんとう)は有名。2005年1月河辺郡河辺町,雄和町を編入。906.09km2。32万3600人(2010)。
