Akita dog - Akitaken (English spelling)

Akita dog - Akitaken (English spelling)

A breed of domestic dog, native to the Odate and Kazuno regions of Akita Prefecture. It was developed by crossbreeding a medium-sized hunting dog bred in this area with the blood of other dog breeds, and has a history of about 100 years. It was also called Odate-ken in the past. When dog fighting was popular in Akita Prefecture, crossbreeding with Tosa fighting dogs and other dog breeds to increase their size and fighting power was noticeable, and as a result, the breed became more and more hybridized. However, dog fighting was banned in 1901 (Meiji 34), and in the Taisho era, the Japanese dog preservation movement gradually grew in popularity, and large Japanese dogs were improved and bred, and in 1931 (Showa 6), it was designated a national natural monument. The preservation of this breed was hit hard by the Second World War, but efforts were made to revive it after the war, and in the 1950s, its popularity increased significantly, and the number of dogs participating in dog shows also increased. Its imposing appearance with erect ears and curled tail attracted the attention of people in Europe and America, and it spread to the West Coast of America, laying the foundation for the breed in America today. Its ancestors were game hunting dogs, but the breed today is no longer used for hunting, and remains popular primarily as a family dog. Coat colors include red, sesame, white, and tiger hair, and the tail must always be curled over the back. Its size is 57.6-70 cm in height and weighs about 32-47.5 kg.
