…When the Arab Islamic military commander Amr ibn al-As founded the city of Fustat (present-day Cairo) in 642, he redeveloped this canal to build the Canal of the Chief of the Faithful (Egyptian Canal), which connects Fustat to the Red Sea. Al-Qulzum, located 1.6 km outside Suez, has long been known as the starting point of this canal. The development of Suez is primarily due to the opening of the Suez Canal. When construction began on the canal in 1859, Suez, which was merely a small fishing village, saw its population increase rapidly, and after the canal was opened in 1869, it rapidly developed into an important port, which it remains to this day. …
