An 11th century embroidered wall hanging from the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Bayeux, France. Woolen thread in eight different shades, including blue, green, and yellow, is used on a 70m x 0.5m piece of linen. The hanging depicts an episode from the Norman conquest of England - a causal story in which a false oath by Harold, Duke of Wessex, leads to William's conquest and Harold's defeat and death - in a vivid and stylized style. It is valuable as a rare and reliable source of information on 11th century customs and customs, and as the only surviving example of this type of work, which was an important category of art at the time.
