〘Noun〙 A gable with an inverted curve. There are thorns at the junction ( waist ) of the curve. It is seen on the roofs of gates and entrances, and on the porches of shrines and temples. 〘名〙 反転曲線をもった山形の破風。曲線の接点(腰)に茨(いばら)がある。門、玄関などの屋根や社寺の向拝に見られる。同様の反転曲線で屋根全体ができているものを唐様(からよう)という。※俳諧・西鶴大矢数(1681)第八「さればこそ寝心よろし膏薬見世 唐破風作りおし明る門」
