A group of volcanic islands in the US state of Alaska, located in the southeastern Bering Sea. The main islands are St. George Island and St. Paul Island. Known as a breeding ground for fur seals, they are also known as the Fur Seal Islands. Explored by Russian G. Pribilov in 1786. Became US territory with the Alaska Purchase in 1867.
