1181 or 82-1226 Founder of the Franciscan Order. An Italian saint famous for his faithfulness to the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, to the point that he was called "the other Christ." His real name was Giovanni Francesco Bernardone. Born into a wealthy textile merchant's family in Assisi, he led the young men of Assisi in a carefree youth, but after being captured in a battle with the neighboring town of Perugia (1202-03) and becoming seriously ill, a turning point came for him. He eventually decided to renounce all worldly pleasures and ambitions and to live by the example of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Gospels (1205).
