…In 1590, he became commander-in-chief of the army and navy of the Union of Utrecht. He reorganized the military based on his study of ancient Roman tactics, and expelled the Spanish from the allied provinces, laying the foundations of the Dutch Republic. In 1600, he also won a victory at Nieuwpoort, but was subsequently thwarted by a counterattack by the brave Spanish general Ambrogio Spinola (1569-1630). During the Twelve Years' Truce (1609-21), he supported the Strict Calvinists (Homarsians) and came into conflict with the Dutch Provincial Assembly, which allied with the Arminians. He arrested their leader, Oldenbarneveld, in 1618 and executed him the following year. …
