…The secular cantata, like the opera, originated from monodies by the Florentine Camerata (a group of musicians and writers who met at the Bardi home around 1580 to discuss the revival of ancient music). The first example of the word cantata being used as a title was Alessandro (de) Grandi's Cantatas and Arias for Solo (c. 1620), but it was not until the 1640s that the music took on a multi-movement form with several pairs of recitatives and arias. Italian opera composers also wrote secular cantatas, but the heyday of the Italian secular cantata was reached by A. Scarlatti. …
