Prabhākara - Prabhākara (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. A thinker of the Mīmānsa school, one of the six schools of Indian philosophy, around 700. This school is called the Gurā school. He wrote Brihatī, a re-commentary on Śabarasvāmin's (date of birth and death unknown) Mīmānsa-sūtra Commentary. He established eight principles: substance, quality, motion, universality, intrinsic potential, similarity, and number, and recognized five types of knowledge bases: direct perception, inference, language, analogy, and hypothesis. He also developed a philosophy of language based on the idea that words in a sentence express their own meaning linked to the meanings of other words in the sentence.

生没年不詳。700年ころの、インド六派哲学の一つミーマーンサー学派の思想家。その学統はグル派とよばれる。彼はシャバラスバーミンŚabarasvāmin（生没年不詳）の『ミーマーンサー・スートラ注解』に対する復注『ブリハティー』を著した。実体・性質・運動・普遍・内属・可能力・類似性・数の八つの原理をたて、直接知覚・推理・言語・類比(るいひ)・仮定の5種の知識根拠を認めた。また、文章中の語は文章中の他の語の意味と結び付いたそれ自身の意味を表示するという考えにたって言語哲学を展開した。
