Vasco Pratolini

Italian novelist. Born in Florence. After working in many jobs, including as a printer and factory worker, he founded the magazine Campo di Marte in 1938. In 1941, he published The Green Carpet, a collection of short stories that showed the influence of Hermetism. His 1945 novel The Neighborhood is a work that captures the experience of anti-fascism through the eyes of a Florentine worker, and was followed by Poor Lovers (1947). His trilogy The History of Italy, consisting of Metello (1955), Waste (1960), and Allegory and Mockery (1966), is, as the titles suggest, a great neorealist epic that depicts the rise of socialism at the end of the 19th century, the Fascist march on Rome, and the postwar political situation, and the young people who were forced to live in these difficult circumstances. His other works include "A Family Journal" (1947) and "A Modern Hero" (1949).

イタリアの小説家。フィレンツェ生まれ。印刷工、工員など数多くの職業を経て、1938年に『カンポ・ディ・マルテ』誌を創刊。41年に、エルメティズモの影響を残す短編集『緑の絨毯(じゅうたん)』を発表。45年の『界隈(かいわい)』は、反ファシズムの体験をフィレンツェの労働者の目でとらえた作品で、後の『貧しき恋人たち』（1947）へ続く。『メテッロ』（1955）、『浪費』（1960）、『寓意(ぐうい)と愚弄(ぐろう)』（1966）からなる三部作『あるイタリアの歴史』は、題名の示すとおり、それぞれ19世紀末の社会主義の台頭、ファシストのローマ進軍、戦後の政治状況と、そのなかで抜き差しならぬ生き方を迫られた若者たちを描いた、ネオレアリズモの一大叙事詩である。ほかに『家族日誌』（1947）、『現代の英雄』（1949）などがある。
