1809‐94 American physician, poet, and writer. He studied medicine at Harvard University, and continued to write during his time studying abroad in Paris (1833-35) and as professor of anatomy and biology at his alma mater (1847-82). He gained fame through essay-like works such as The Dictator of the Breakfast Table (1858) and the novel Elsie Benner (1861), but he showed no social interest in a society shaken by the slavery issue, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War, and was even criticized by JR Lowell as a "staunch conservative."
