Yugoslavian writer. Born in Montenegro, he lost his parents in the war of liberation as a boy and became an orphan. After graduating from the Belgrade Middle School in Krušovac, he entered the Faculty of Literature at the University of Belgrade, commuting from an orphanage. He suffered from several serious illnesses and felt inferior about his frail constitution. He began writing novels at around the age of 17, and in 1955 published a collection of short stories, The Devils Are Coming, which drew attention both at home and abroad for depicting the existence of angry young people in a socialist country. In 1964, he serialized The Hero on a Donkey in the literary magazine Sabremenik, which became a big hit, but the publication of the book was banned because it contained parts that mocked the system. His 1975 work In Cold Blood alludes to the West German neo-Nazism that exploited migrant workers from Eastern Europe, and has been translated into Japanese along with The Hero on a Donkey.

ユーゴスラビアの作家。モンテネグロに生まれ，少年のとき解放戦争で両親を失い孤児となった。ベオグラードのクルショバツ中学を卒業後，ベオグラード大学文学部に入学，孤児院から通学した。数度の大病に襲われ，自身の虚弱体質に劣等感を抱いていた。17歳ごろから小説を書き始め，1955年短編集《悪魔達がやって来る》を発表，社会主義国における怒れる若者の存在を描いて内外の話題を呼んだ。1964年《ろばに乗った英雄》を文芸雑誌《サブレメニク》に連載し大評判となるが，体制を嘲笑する部分があるなどの理由で単行本の出版は禁止された。1975年の《冷血の地》は東欧の出稼ぎ労働者を食い物にする西ドイツのネオ・ナチズムを暗示する作品で，《ろばに乗った英雄》とともに邦訳がある。
