Japanese: アオイトトンボ - あおいととんぼ

An insect of the Odonata family, Acanthodidae (illustration). Body length is about 40 mm. It is so named because the back of its body is metallic green. The underside is yellowish brown. In mature males, the yellowish brown parts turn black, and the entire body surface becomes covered with white powder. This species is found in the northern part of the Eurasian continent and is commonly found widely from Europe through Siberia to the northern part of the Japanese archipelago. In Hokkaido and the northern half of Honshu, it is found in large numbers in marshes and mountain ponds. Eggs laid in the tissues of anhyacinths in the previous autumn hatch in the spring, and the larvae finish growing in about three months, emerge around July or August, and appear in water areas until autumn to reproduce.

トンボ目アオイトトンボ科の昆虫（イラスト）。体長約40mm。体の背面は金属緑色なのでこの名がある。下面は黄褐色。成熟した雄では黄褐部が黒化し，また体表面全体に白粉を帯びてくる。ユーラシア大陸の北部の種類で，ヨーロッパからシベリアを通じて日本列島の北方に広くふつうに産する。北海道と本州の北半部では湿原や山間の池沼に多産する。前年の秋に挺水植物の組織内に産みつけられた卵は春に孵化（ふか）し，幼虫は3ヵ月くらいで成長を終わり，7～8月ごろ羽化し秋まで水域に現れて生殖活動を行う。
