1568‐1649 Spanish sculptor. Born in Alcalá la Real, Jaén, and died in Seville. He was the leading figure in the Sevillian school of wooden painted icon sculpture in the first half of the 17th century, and designed numerous altar screens for monasteries and churches in Andalusia and the New World, as well as carving the accompanying sculptures and images of the Passion for religious processions. In contrast to the strong expressionism of the Castilian school, represented by G. Fernández, he delicately harmonized realism and idealization, and left behind many works that had a sweet religious quality reminiscent of Murillo, as well as a strong sense of tranquil, meditative mysticism.
