Chest of drawers

Japanese: 簞笥 - たんす

A storage piece of furniture with drawers. The size, shape, and construction vary according to the items to be stored inside, and also change with the era. The word tansu comes from the Chinese word tanshi, where tan is round and tan is square, both of which meant containers for storing food and clothing.

They are divided into those for general households and those for professional use. The main type for general use are wardrobe chests, and the main types are kosode chests in the Edo period, and wardrobe chests, storage chests, and Western clothing chests in modern times. In addition, individual clothing chests such as haori chests, obi chests, tabi chests, and costume chests are also made.

　一般家庭用と職業用に分けられる。一般用の中心は衣装簞笥で，おもなものとしては江戸時代では小袖簞笥，近代では衣装簞笥，整理簞笥，洋服簞笥などがあるが，そのほか羽織簞笥，帯簞笥，足袋（たび）簞笥，装束簞笥など個別の衣類簞笥も作られている。
