This is a business smartphone developed by the Canadian company Research In Motion (RIM). In Europe and the US, it is widely used by businessmen, and is known to be a favorite of Mr. Obama, who became the US President in 2009. As of January 2009, NTT DoCoMo is selling the BlackBerry 8707h in Japan, and the latest model, the BlackBerry Bold, is scheduled to go on sale in February.
The 8707h and Bold are devices with a horizontally long screen and a small keyboard for text input below it. The keyboard does not slide or fold. Although small, it has the same QWERTY keyboard as a PC, so it was accepted by businessmen who use e-mail a lot. On top of its own operating system (basic software), it comes with various software such as a web browser, e-mail software, instant messenger, and calendar (schedule).
With the exception of basic services such as voice calls and SMS (Short Message Service) that are completed within the carrier's lines, in order to use functions that use the Internet, it is necessary to use the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) for individuals and small and medium-sized businesses or the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution (BES) for businesses. In Japan, NTT DoCoMo offers BIS and BES as additional functions for its FOMA service.
By introducing a server program developed by RIM into a company, it is possible to securely access and synchronize information within the company's information systems (such as Microsoft's Exchange and IBM's Lotus Notes/Domino) by communicating via BES.

カナダのResearch In Motion(RIM)社が開発したビジネス向けスマートフォン。欧米ではビジネスマンに利用者が多く、2009年米国大統領に就任したオバマ氏が愛用していることでも知られる。2009年1月現在、国内ではNTTドコモがBlackBerry 8707hを販売しているほか、2月には最新モデルBlackBerry Bold(ボールド)も発売予定である。
8707hやBoldは、横長の画面の下に文字入力用の小さなキーボードが付いた端末形状。キーボード部のスライドや折りたたみの機能はない。小さいながらもパソコンと同じQWERTY配列の文字キーボードがあるため、電子メールを多用するビジネスマンに受け入れられた。独自のOS(基本ソフト)上に、ウェブブラウザー、電子メールソフト、インスタントメッセンジャー、カレンダー(予定表)など各種のソフトを搭載している。
音声通話やSMS(ショートメッセージサービス)等の通信キャリアの回線内で完結する基本サービスを除き、インターネットを利用する機能を使うには、個人・中小企業向けのブラックベリーインターネットサービス(BIS)もしくは企業向けのブラックベリーエンタープライズソリューション(BES)の利用が必要となる。国内ではNTTドコモがFOMAサービスの付加機能としてBISとBESを提供している。
RIMが開発したサーバープログラムを企業内に導入することで、BES経由での通信によって、企業内の情報システム(MicrosoftのExchangeやIBMのLotus Notes/Domino等)にセキュリティーを保ってアクセスし、情報を同期することが可能になっている。
